External 10th & 12th admission in Maharashtra: NIOS or Form No. 17?

If you left school, failed a board exam, or cannot attend a regular school, you can still pass 10th or 12th as an external (private) student. In Maharashtra there are two main routes: NIOS, the national open school, and the Maharashtra board’s private-candidate route, known as Form No. 17 (“17 number form”). This guide explains both in plain words, with the current dates and fees.

What “external” 10th or 12th means

An external or private student takes the board exam without studying full time in a regular school. You prepare at home, with coaching or online, and sit the same kind of board exam. The certificate you get is a normal board certificate, either from NIOS or from the Maharashtra board.

Route 2: Maharashtra board private candidates (Form No. 17)

Form No. 17 lets students who are not in a regular school register for the Maharashtra SSC (10th) or HSC (12th) exam. You register online and are linked to a school or junior college that you select. That school checks your documents.

Dates for the February–March 2027 exam

  • Regular registration: 1 August – 30 September 2026 (closed).
  • With late fee (₹100): 1 – 15 October 2026.
  • Very late: 16 – 31 October 2026, with an extra fee for each day.

Fees and documents

  • Registration fee ₹1,110 and processing fee ₹100 for both 10th and 12th. The exam fee is paid later.
  • Documents: original school leaving certificate (or a duplicate with an affidavit), Aadhaar card and a passport-size photo.

How to apply

  1. Visit the school or junior college you want to be linked to, and note its code, subject scheme, medium and stream.
  2. Fill Form No. 17 online on the board website (mahahsscboard.in, Student Corner), upload documents and pay online.
  3. Take the printout of the form and fee receipt, with your original documents, to that school or college before the deadline.
  4. After the documents are checked, you get an enrolment certificate online. Then you fill the exam form and pay the exam fee.

Which route should you choose?

  • You missed the October Form 17 deadline: NIOS Block 2 is open until 31 January 2027.
  • You failed 10th or 12th but passed some subjects: compare NIOS TOC (up to 2 subjects carried over) with the Maharashtra board’s repeat-exam route. See our guide to NIOS after failing.
  • You want flexible timing or different subjects (for example sports, arts, health reasons, or preparing for NEET, JEE or CA alongside): NIOS gives 5 years and 9 exam chances, and subject choice is wider.
  • You want a Maharashtra board certificate and can be ready for February–March: Form No. 17 can work well.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Paying NIOS or board fees to an agent. Official fees are paid only on the official portals.
  • Anyone who promises “guaranteed pass”, “marks setting” or a certificate without exams. This is fraud.
  • Choosing subjects without checking what your next course or entrance exam needs.
  • Missing the TOC marksheet deadline (10 days after NIOS admission).

Questions we are asked often

Is external 12th through NIOS valid in Maharashtra?

Yes. NIOS is a national board set up by the Government of India, and NIOS says its certificates are equivalent to those of other school boards. Colleges in Maharashtra admit NIOS students. For professional courses or entrance exams, check that year’s eligibility rules first.

Can I still apply for Form No. 17 for the February–March 2027 exam?

As of 8 October 2026, the regular window (1 August – 30 September 2026) has closed. You can still apply with a late fee from 1 to 15 October 2026, and with a daily very-late fee from 16 to 31 October 2026, if the board keeps these dates. Check mahahsscboard.in before you apply.

What is the last date for NIOS 10th and 12th admission now?

For Block 2 (first exam in September–October 2027), admission without late fee is open until 31 January 2027. Late fees of ₹260, ₹520 and ₹910 apply from 1 February to 15 March 2027.

I failed 12th at the Maharashtra board. Which option is better?

It depends on how many subjects you passed and when. With NIOS, up to two passed subjects (33%+, passed in 2022 or later) can be carried over through TOC. If you only need to clear a few subjects at the Maharashtra board, its own repeat-exam route may be quicker. Bring your marksheet and we will compare both.

Do I need to visit Delhi or the NIOS office to take admission?

No. NIOS admission is fully online on sdmis.nios.ac.in. The NIOS Regional Centre for Pune is in Kothrud if you need official help.

Not sure which route fits you?

Send us your last marksheet on WhatsApp. We will tell you honestly whether NIOS or Form No. 17 suits you better, and what the dates mean for you. If you choose NIOS, we can apply for you on the official NIOS portal and coach you for the exams, at our Pune centre or online.
