Left school or failed a board exam?

External 10th & 12th, or continuing education after a break

If you need to finish 10th or 12th without going to a regular school, open schooling through NIOS is the usual route. Here’s how it works.

External 10th & 12th admission through NIOS

NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling) is a national board under the Ministry of Education. You study at home or with coaching and sit NIOS exams, with no daily school attendance. Class 10 needs age 14+ and a Class 8 certificate or a self-certificate. Class 12 needs age 15+ and a Class 10 pass from a recognised board.

In Maharashtra you can also appear privately for the state board through Form No. 17. We explain both so you can choose.

Open schooling: continue your education after a break

NIOS has no upper age limit. Dropped out after Class 8 or 9? You can start Class 10. Failed Class 10 or 12 at CBSE, ICSE or the Maharashtra board? Up to two subjects you passed (at least 33%, in the last five years) can be carried over through Transfer of Credit (TOC).

Failed or missed this year’s board exam? Stream 2 (open in May–June) lets you sit the NIOS exam in September–October.

Common questions

NIOS admission questions parents ask us

Short answers based on the official NIOS prospectus for 2026-27. Rules can change, so we always check the latest NIOS notice with you.

Who can take NIOS admission for Class 10 or Class 12?

For Class 10 (Secondary) you must be at least 14 years old and have a Class 8 pass certificate, or a self-certificate if you have no school record. For Class 12 (Senior Secondary) you must be at least 15 and have passed Class 10 from a recognised board. There is no upper age limit.

What is the NIOS admission last date for 2026-27?

For Block 2 (first exam in September–October 2027), admission without late fee runs from 16 September 2026 to 31 January 2027. After that, late fees apply: ₹260 (1–15 February), ₹520 (16–28 February) and ₹910 (1–15 March 2027). Block 1 admission for the March–April 2027 exam has closed. Always confirm dates on nios.ac.in before you pay.

How much are the NIOS fees?

NIOS admission fee for 5 subjects (Stream 1, 2026-27): Class 10 is ₹2,340 for boys, ₹1,890 for girls and third gender, and ₹1,560 for SC/ST, ex-servicemen and persons with disabilities. Class 12 is ₹2,600, ₹2,150 and ₹1,690. Each extra subject is ₹940, and ₹70 is charged on every online payment. The exam fee is separate: ₹300 per subject, plus ₹150 for a subject with practicals. You pay these only to NIOS on its portal. Our coaching fees are separate and listed on this page.

Can I do external 10th or 12th through NIOS in Maharashtra?

Yes. NIOS is a national board, so students in Maharashtra can apply online and study without attending a regular school. Another option is appearing privately for the Maharashtra State Board through Form No. 17. The two have different dates, subjects and rules, and we can help you compare them.

I dropped out or failed. Can I continue my studies?

Yes. If you left school after Class 8 or 9, you can start NIOS Class 10. If you failed Class 10 or 12 at CBSE, ICSE or the Maharashtra board, up to two subjects you passed with at least 33% in the last five years can be carried over through Transfer of Credit (TOC). If you failed or missed this year’s board exam, Stream 2 (open in May–June) lets you sit the NIOS exam in September–October.

Is a NIOS certificate valid for college and jobs?

NIOS was set up by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, and is authorised to hold Class 10 and 12 exams and give certificates. NIOS says its certificates are equivalent to those of other school boards, and the Association of Indian Universities granted equivalence in 1991. For entrance exams such as JEE, NEET or CUET, check that year’s eligibility rules before choosing NIOS subjects.

What is the NIOS On-Demand Exam (ODE)?

ODE lets enrolled NIOS learners sit a subject exam on a date they book, instead of waiting for the public exam. Stream 1 learners can register for ODE after their first public exam. Students who have already passed Class 10 or 12 and want to clear or add subjects can join Stream 3 or Stream 4, which allow ODE only. The exam fee is ₹600 per subject, plus ₹250 for a subject with practicals.

Is SWOT Academy part of NIOS?

No. SWOT Academy is an independent private coaching centre in Pune, running since 2010. We are not the NIOS board or an official NIOS study centre. We help you apply on the official NIOS portal, choose subjects, and prepare with classes, TMA guidance, practical help and mock tests.
