Chennai centres in numbers
Those 53 listings come from 34 institutions; a centre that teaches in two mediums is listed twice. About 62% of the listings (33) include science, in line with the rest of the state. Senior Secondary (Class 12) is offered on 36 listings and Secondary (Class 10) on 53. Only one is ITI-linked; the other 33 are regular schools or colleges.
Medium and where the centres are
Tamil medium is available on 16 listings. The rest are Hindi and English. Addresses on the list point to Chennai, Lakshmipuram, Tambaram and Sholinganallur, across 29 PIN codes in all. Going by PIN codes and addresses, 4 of the 53 listings filed under Chennai are actually in Thiruvallur district.
Before you choose a centre in Chennai
Forms, fees and document uploads all go through the NIOS portal, so a visit to the Regional Centre is rarely needed. The study centre and the exam centre are separate; NIOS publishes exam centres before each session. Coming from the Tamil Nadu state board? NIOS lets you carry up to two passed subjects across through Transfer of Credit, which can save a year. Roughly 42% have a renewal date that has not yet passed, so a quick check before applying is sensible. Our part, for students in Chennai, is to check a Tamil-medium seat if you want one for Class 10 and whether Transfer of Credit can carry subjects over from your last marksheet before anything is paid.
