Regional Centre for Bihar
NIOS Regional Centre Patna covers the whole of Bihar, and a smaller NIOS Cell at Darbhanga serves part of north Bihar. The 2026-27 prospectus counts 209 active centres for the Patna office’s area.
Bihar NIOS centres in numbers
On 8 October 2026 the official NIOS study-centre list showed 211 active listings in Bihar, from 157 institutions in 38 districts as NIOS names them. 155 of these institutions are schools or colleges and 2 (1%) are linked to ITIs. Science is offered on 149 listings (71%), and 18 listings (9%) show a renewal date that is still current. The districts with the most listings are Patna (24), Darbhanga (12), Samastipur (10), Muzaffarpur (10) and East Champaran (8). By medium: Hindi and English (203); Urdu (4); English only (3); English and Sanskrit (1). Most Bihar listings teach in Hindi and English, and Urdu appears in some districts. Patna has the largest group of school-type centres; Gaya’s list is shorter, but every listing there offers science.
Board exam or NIOS in Bihar
The Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) has its own compartment and private-candidate routes for matric and intermediate. After a failed Bihar board exam, many families compare that with NIOS Stream 2 and Transfer of Credit.
